PREFACE

The rise, growth and contribution of the DMK constitute an important part of the contemporary history of India. Robert L. Hardgrave was the first to acknowledge this by writing a book on the rise of the DMK up to 1965 under the title The Dravidian Movement. M.R. Barnett's The Politics of Cultural Nationalism in South India published in 1976 also discusses the rise of the DMK with special reference to Tamil cultural nationalism. P. Spratt's DMK in Power appeared in 1970. N. Balakrishnan, a research scholar in Madurai Kamaraj University, submitted his Ph.D. thesis titled “History of DMK” in 1984. But so far there has been no attempt to give a detailed history of the DMK from 1949 to 2009. The present work seeks to fill this gap.

I express my sincere thanks to Dr. S. Bhaskaran, formerly Professor and Head, Department of Political Science, Annamalai University, Chidambarm, who has encouraged me to take up this work and also guided me in the course of my research on the history of the DMK.

I am very much thankful to Dr K. Rajamanickam, IAS (Retd.) for his support in completing this work. My thanks are due to Mr. T.K.S. Elangovan, M.P., the DMK Organizing Secretary; Mr. R.
